1st September 2016We all need to drink water to survive. Drinking water is an essential requirement for good health to maintain body temperature, remove all waste and keep our joints healthy.
Most of us are ‘On the Go’ all the time. Of course in different ways we sitting, walking, skipping, running and generally exercising.
We are all using body water at various levels. Water makes up over half our body weight and needs to be continuously replaced.
Even without exercise, you lose water each day by just going to the bathroom, when you breath and perspire. If the weather is hot you lose water even faster. If you are unfortunately ill, you will lose water at a faster pace and can become dehydrated.
If I am dehydrated, how can I tell?
A dry mouth, or dry skin is a tell tail sign. If you are feeling tired, sleepy or fatigued. Experiencing headaches or feeling extremely thirsty. Confusion or dizziness. No tears when crying, or little or no urine.
It is best not to wait for symptoms but to take preventative action by drinking plenty of water!
You are at highest risk of dehydration if you are older, have a medical condition, are ill. Being pregnant or breastfeeding will demand more water.
The best way to avoid dehydration is to have a glass or bottle of water on your desk, in your car, handbag etc. Any place that will remind you to continuously drink water. On your coffee table or on your desk at work. Drink water at restaurants, during workouts and at every meal of the day.
How much water you should drink a day does vary with each individual. Eight glasses a day is a sensible goal.
Another tip as to how to measure you are drinking enough water, is the ‘colour of your urine’
If your urine is colourless or light yellow, you are most likely to be well hydrated. Dark yellow or amber colour could be a sign of dehydration.
