On the 2nd of February of each year, there is an American tradition where a groundhog is said to predict the weather.
This take place in a borough of Jefferson Country (Pensylvania – USA) called Punxsutawney, where a groundhog called Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow and if he see’s his shadow there will be will be 6 more weeks of winter, if no shadow is seen then there will be an early spring.
Obviously, nobody takes this forecast seriously but seen as a fun tradition where people come together (as many as 40,000) for a fantastic social event.
This tradition was made famous in the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell where a grumpy TV weatherman who is assigned to cover the Groundhog Day festivities is forced to re-live the same day over and over again.
